CEREC One-Visit Dentistry in Midwest City, OK
There are many situations where people need a dental crown. One of the most common reasons is to replace a particularly large filling that has weakened but not enough of the tooth structure remains to replace the filling. Another reason for a crown is to strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy. Sometimes a crown is needed to fix a misshapen or stained tooth.
Getting a dental crown the old-fashioned way requires more than one visit to the dentist. The process usually goes something like this: At your first appointment, your tooth is prepared to receive the dental crown, then your dentist makes an impression of the tooth structure. Because this impression goes to an outside lab, the crown will not be ready for a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, a temporary crown is placed on your tooth, and you make an appointment to return for your permanent crown.
What if you could do it all in one appointment? Now you can! With CEREC® technology, you can get your crown in just one appointment.
What Does CEREC Mean?
CEREC is an acronym that stands for the following terms:
- Chairside. Patients literally sit in the dentist chair and wait while the crown is fabricated.
- Economical. Because there is no fabrication lab, the process makes more sense from a financial standpoint.
- Restoration. With a CEREC crown, patients will be able to chew comfortably again.
- Esthetic. CEREC crowns look natural and blend in seamlessly with the rest of the teeth.
- Ceramic. Because no metal is used in these crowns, there is no dark ring at the base.
How CEREC Works
The first step in the process is to prepare your tooth for the dental crown. Because the crown fits directly over your natural tooth, some of the tooth will have to be removed to make room.
Next, a digital impression is taken of the tooth and the chewing surface is measured. All of this is done via imaging; that information will be fed to the specially designed software. Three-dimensional technology creates a crown that fits your tooth structure perfectly. With CEREC technology, the uncomfortable, goopy impressions you might remember from getting a previous crown are a thing of the past.
While you wait, your crown is milled from a custom-colored ceramic block—usually in less than 15 minutes. The crown will be fitted and adjusted to make sure it feels comfortable before it is permanently cemented into place. All of this takes place in just one appointment!
