When should I start taking my child to the dentist?
We recommend that you bring your children to the dentist shortly after their first tooth erupts. That might seem young to some parents, but that first visit to the dentist is merely to familiarize them with the sights and sounds and smells of the dentist office. We don’t do too much other than a brief examination and talk about taking good care of your kids’ teeth at home. We want to instill good habits by starting children young, and we aim to make this as pleasant an experience as possible for them!
Other goals of that first visit include keeping kids calm while they take a spin in the dental chair. You can help with this beforehand by only speaking of going to the dentist in a positive way. Talk about what they can expect at the dentist so nothing will be a surprise. You can even “play” dentist at home beforehand, pretending to examine their teeth.
If you have fears or anxiety about the dentist, do your best to keep those to yourself. You can also bring along a stuffed “buddy” to help kids feel more comfortable and relaxed while they are in our office.
