How long does it take to get a dental implant?
The entire process of getting a dental implant takes place over a period of several months. The implant surgery itself doesn’t take very much time, but time is needed for the implant to fully integrate into the jawbone.
Here’s how the process works:
- If your dentist determines you have adequate bone density and you are free of gum disease, you can have the implants placed. It is fairly common to have the implant placed immediately after your tooth is extracted. You can ask your dentist if this will be your scenario as well.
- Once the dental implant has been placed, it takes about three to six months for the implant to permanently integrate with your jawbone. This is called “osseointegration.”
- After the implants are fully integrated into the jawbone, your permanent crown will be placed onto the implant abutment.
Although the dental implant process takes place over a period of several months, your implant is designed to last for a lifetime with proper care. Dental implants are generally considered to be the gold standard when it comes to tooth replacement. With permanent dental implants, you will have no food restrictions so you can eat all of your favorites. Caring for them is easy as well; simply brush and floss as you normally would and visit your dentist twice each year for checkups and cleanings.
